Our first race today which is s practice race called the trophy run followed by a warm reception at the MN Fairgrounds “Back to the 50’s weekend event.    Team #100 J&K did well with a 10 second race(within 10 seconds of expected time).  Team #95 (S&D) did great with a 37 second race, which is very good for rookies and way better than we did last year.  Must be the mentor training :) or the luck of the car or Scotts racing heritage ;).    Both cars did well.  The evening was a cool experience seeing what was The largest public car show I’ve ever seen with over 11,000+ cars. 

Official race kickoff tomorrow mid day after opening ceremonies. Wish us luck!

Hello everyone!  Welcome to the 2025 Throttle Car Club Great Race Blog.   The purpose of this blog is to provide a centralized public location for all things related to our adventures in competing in the upcoming 2025 Great Race.  Here, you will be able to learn about this unique rally race, what it takes to enter and prepare for the race as well as follow along with our daily progress. You can  even make comments and share the blog with anyone.   For those that are new to this, the Great Race is a organized vintage car rally race that has been going on for over 44 years.  Each year over 150, 2-person teams compete with driving @2500 miles cross country over 9 days.  The newest car allowed is a 1975, with a great variety of cars, many which are pre-WW1 open cockpit race cars.  Each year has a different starting and ending location.  For 2025, the race starts in St. Paul, MN on June 21st with the finish line ending in Lake Murray SC on June 29...

Race -Prep

Preparing for this is challenging in itself.  We are given a list of requirements to be “race ready”.  When the cars arrive in St. Paul, they will need to pass a technical inspection meeting those requirements which include retrofitting a special “timewise” speedometer and a rally clock.  Additionally the cars factory speedometer and odometer must disabled or blacked out.  Each car must also have the following items in the car: Emergency Road Kit, Tow Rope, first aid kit, 2 gallons of water and a flashlight.     The speedometer requires the custom fabrication of mounting bracket to both mount the speedometer inside as well as the speed sensor at the front wheel along with/two magnets mounted to the wheel.  I also had to fabricate a bracket to mount the rally clocks to the factory ash trays so I did not make any holes in the original dash.  See pic below for what I used for both cars.  Feel the heat!  To imagine, these little cars are ver...
