DAY SUMMARY:

It’s feeling like groundhog day….  Early up, early breakfast, pack up, clean cars & check fluids, pick up race directions, speedo calibration, race start. Hosted lunch, race, hosted car show dinner, team nightcap, bed… repeat, repeat, repeat.  

Today was a good day with lots of elevation changes.  For whatever reason, Throttle seems to attract the local PD.   First car #95 a couple days ago, got pulled over(off the clock) for idling on the side of a busy road. Then today car #100 got pulled over (on the clock) for stopping too long at an intersection.  We were able to submit a time delay for this.  Our rookies had great times today and back in 5th place and Kev and I did great other than messing up our last leg somehow.  Luckily that gets thrown out as part of our 5 worst scores.

    Great pics! Playing "press your luck" no whammies no whammies police siren blare and lights come on, is no way to race!! 😉

Hello everyone!  Welcome to the 2025 Throttle Car Club Great Race Blog.   The purpose of this blog is to provide a centralized public location for all things related to our adventures in competing in the upcoming 2025 Great Race.  Here, you will be able to learn about this unique rally race, what it takes to enter and prepare for the race as well as follow along with our daily progress. You can  even make comments and share the blog with anyone.   For those that are new to this, the Great Race is a organized vintage car rally race that has been going on for over 44 years.  Each year over 150, 2-person teams compete with driving @2500 miles cross country over 9 days.  The newest car allowed is a 1975, with a great variety of cars, many which are pre-WW1 open cockpit race cars.  Each year has a different starting and ending location.  For 2025, the race starts in St. Paul, MN on June 21st with the finish line ending in Lake Murray SC on June 29...

Race -Prep

Preparing for this is challenging in itself.  We are given a list of requirements to be “race ready”.  When the cars arrive in St. Paul, they will need to pass a technical inspection meeting those requirements which include retrofitting a special “timewise” speedometer and a rally clock.  Additionally the cars factory speedometer and odometer must disabled or blacked out.  Each car must also have the following items in the car: Emergency Road Kit, Tow Rope, first aid kit, 2 gallons of water and a flashlight.     The speedometer requires the custom fabrication of mounting bracket to both mount the speedometer inside as well as the speed sensor at the front wheel along with/two magnets mounted to the wheel.  I also had to fabricate a bracket to mount the rally clocks to the factory ash trays so I did not make any holes in the original dash.  See pic below for what I used for both cars.  Feel the heat!  To imagine, these little cars are ver...

Day (-2) Thursday 6/19

Added some Alfa Romeo good luck emblems to the cars because we’re going to need it.  .  In 1923, driver  Ugo Sivocci ,  seeking good fortune, painted a four-leaf clover on his Alfa Romeo race car for the Targa Florio race.  He won, and the clover became a symbol of the brand, initially for racing and later for high-performance production models.    Both cars passed our tech inspections giving my word to pick up a missing fire extinguisher on car #100 before race day.  We did our first speedometer calibration run after 2 hours debating on which formula to use to adjust our time wise speedometers.  Check. That is all figured out now.    Throttle Garage is 10x more prepared than we were last year. Here are some pics of the evening welcome reception and X-cup auction.
